STEVE HAMILTON

Editor

Editor STEVE HAMILTON is another member of Hal Hartley's well-established team of collaborators, having worked on all Hal's films since "Theory Of Achievement," yet he is a relative newcomer to the team.

"I didn't go to film school," explains Steve. "I studied philosophy and literature and came to New York to learn about film. I'd seen 'The Unbelievable Truth' and really liked it, so I thought I'd like to work for Hal Hartley. By chance I met Mike Spiller who introduced me to Hal and I worked as his assistant on 'Theory Of Achievement' in 1991. I became Sound Editor on 'Ambition' and I moved up from there. My whole development in film has been with Hal."

Hamilton explains that he and Hartley are using a different editing and post-production process on "Amateur," thanks to their own new state-of-the-art technology. "This is a huge departure because, instead of cutting film, we're digitizing video images. It's like cutting and pasting on a word processor. It allows us more experimentation and flexibility. Everything is transferred to video, so we can try all sort of things in seconds instead of hours. Hal and I are both primarily interested in artistic, and by the same token, ecenomic independence, and having our own post-production facility gives us that and creates a more flexible environment for ourselves."
