MICHAEL SPILLER

Cinematographer

Responsible for achieving the distinctive look of Hal Hartley's work is Cinematographer MICHAEL SPILLER, who has worked on all Hal's films since they first met at Purchase University nearly fifteen years ago.

"It's a phenomenal relationship," says Spiller. "We're not only great collaborators, we're great friends--we've grown up together as filmmakers. Right from the start I loved working with Hal; he had great ideas, he inspired me. And he liked what I gave him.

"With this film, we've pushed things a little further than we have in the past in terms of color, contrast, compositions, pushing the night look -- going for a really stylized blue. It's unrealistic but consistant. We're pushing the extremes of what the film stock is capable of. It's a little more exciting and the film has action and suspense elements so it calls for that look."

Spiller's other feature film credits include: "Revolution" (Dir: Jeff Kahn); "Life In The Food Chain" (Dir: Doug Katz); "Lincoln And The War Within" (Dir: Cal Skaggs); "Hand Gun" ( Dir: Witney Rasnick). Television credits include documentary work for the BBC and HBO on "The Prize"; two TV shows called "Fishing With John" featuring ice fishing in Maine with William Dafoe and deep sea fishing in Thailand with Dennis Hopper; and "Pete And Pete" for Nickolodeon. Music videos include work for "Sonic Youth," "Nitzer Ebb," "Smashing Pumpkins," "Arc Angels," "Brand Nubian," "Tecnotronic" and "Schooly D." Spiller also worked on the Clinton Presidency Campaign and was recently asked to light an Oval Ofiice address. "I told them 'I can't do it--I'm working with Hal Hartley.'"
