Robert Schneider

(Screenwriter, author of Brother of Sleep )


Robert Schneider was born in Bregenz, Austria in 1961. He grew up in a mountain village in the Alps in the upper valley of the Rhine, where he lives today as a freelance author.
Schneider studied composition, history of art, and theater studies in Vienna from 1981-1986. His first play, "Die Strandgeher," was awarded a playwright grant from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education and Art in 1988. In 1990, he received a private grant in the U.S. for the work on his first novel, Schlafes Bruder(Brother of Sleep). The novel appeared in 1992 and immediately became a worldwide success.
Brother of Sleep was published in 1992 by Reclam Verlag in Leipzig, Germany, and by The Overlook Press in the U.S. The novel has been a sensational literary success, with over 200 reviews worldwide. It has been translated into 24 languages, and Schneider has received numerous awards including the Premio Grinzane Cavour (the most important literary prize in Italy for foreign-language literature), the Prix Médicis (Paris, France), among many others.
In 1993, his dramatic monologue, "Dreck," premiered at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. The piece was awarded the Dramatist's Prize at the "Potsdam Theater Days," and was selected by the jury as the "best contemporary stage work."
