PAT O'CONNOR
Thoughts on Dancing at Lughnasa

Brian Friel's play about a poor but proud and characterful family in rural Ireland stayed with me from the time I saw an early production in London almost ten years ago. Conversations with Noel Pearson, the producer of both play and film, fanned my interest and culminated in my working with the distinguished writer Frank McGuinness on his screenplay.

The challenge for me in making this film was to draw together intense and extraordinary things - romance, humor, tragedy, realism and mysticism - in a work that is, I hope, emotionally uplifting and a tribute to the human spirit.
