DANA WHEELER-NICHOLSON

(Gail)

Dana portrays Gail, Frank's ex-girlfriend, and match-maker extraordinaire. It is through her intrigues that Gail maintains contact with the world outside: "I think it's her last ditch effort to have some kind of human contact, even though it's not her own," says Wheeler-Nicholson, "All of the characters have made a choice to not be in the world."

Wheeler-Nicholson's theory is that "we have a whole new crop of neuroses because of all this computer activity. It's easy now to have communications with a computer and not ever have to leave your house. People would rather play on their computers than go to a museum, or go see a friend, or go take care of their sister's kids."

Nicholson has made a point of staying away from long-distance relationships because "I think they're a violation of intimacy. The nature of intimacy is human contact and communication. In my own life, I try to keep things face-to-face as much as I can. Being on location you do end up being on the phone a lot but I try to avoid it because I think it's dangerous. With telephones you can't see the other person's face, see their responses, and when you hang up the phone you have a whole fantasy life about who this person is or isn't.

"The joy for me in playing Gail is that she's a real shadow part of myself. I know how easy it would be for me to do what she does, to be what she is. Like Gail, I tend to isolate myself. It's a real struggle for me to stay out in the world. I have to make sure that I'm getting out and seeing people, and when I have a relationship, making sure that it's not on the phone, that I don't hide by being busy."

Wheeler-Nicholson recently finished shooting a new episode of "The X-Files," a program of which she is particularly fond, and will be seen in a wide variety of upcoming movies including THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR, directed by Allan Haft, Richard Schenkman's THE POMPATUS OF LOVE, Robert Boris' FRANK AND JESSIE, Richard Mauro's NICK AND JANE, and Sam Weissman's film BYE BYE LOVE. Earlier, she played Wyatt Earp's wife in TOMBSTONE, and has had parts in a long list of television programs including Michael Mann's "Crime Story" and "Seinfeld."
