DANIEL AUTEUIL
(Alex)
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Algiers, to a father who was an opera singer, Daniel Auteuil spent his youth
and adolescence in "all the theaters of provincial France." His desire to be an actor
dates back to those days.
At seventeen, he participated in a few operettas before enrolling in acting classes
with François Florent.
After making a rather eccentric debut at the Theatre National de Paris suspended in
a bag, legs waving about, he was cast in the American production in Paris for GODSPELL.
He performed with the company for two years before joining the cast of LA FOLLE DE
CHAILLOT, opposite Edwige Feuillére. In 1981, he directed and starred in Gérard Lauzier's play, LE GARCON D'APPARTEMENT.
His first film role was in Gérard Pirès' L'AGGRESSION (1974). He continued his work
in the theater as he made his way to bigger and better film roles. After appearing
in several comedies, he grew concerned that his talent might seem limited to comical
roles, and went on to star in various thrillers, among them L'INDIC (1982) and L'ARBALÈTE
(1984).
Auteuil explored characters of a graver nature in LES FAUVES (1983), and in Claude
Berri's widely acclaimed epic, JEAN DE FLORETTE (1986), and its sequel, MANON OF
THE SPRING (1986), the story of a scheming landowner and the tragedy his greed brings
upon the lives of his neighbors. His performance in JEAN DE FLORETTE earned him the Cèsar
for Best Actor.
He also starred in the widely popular, ROMUALD AND JULIETTE (1988), Coline Serreau's
film about a wealthy business executive who falls deeply in love with his black cleaning
lady.
UN COEUR EN HIVER, Auteuil's second film with director Claude Sautet and his third
performance with co-star Emmanuelle Bèart, earned him the 1993 Felix Award for Best
Actor at the European Festival of Cinema.
LES VOLEURS marks Auteuil's second collaboration with Catherine Deneuve and André
Téchiné, the previous one being MA SAISON PREFEREE.
