CATHERINE DENEUVE

(Marie)

BIOGRAPHY

Recognized universally for both her acting ability and patrician beauty, Catherine Deneuve is one of the most admired women in the world. She is so respected in her native France, that in 1985, Deneuve's profile was selected to represent the updated image of "Marianne", the French national symbol. A statuette of "Marianne" is displayed in every city and town hall in the country.

Catherine Deneuve was brought into the international eye when she won the 1964 Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or for Best Actress for her portrayal of "Genevive" in Jacques Demy's musical THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG. Inspired by her experience in THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, Deneuve resolved to seriously devote herself to acting. She credits Demy for her decision, stating, "He made me learn to act, to love acting for the first time, to believe what I act."

During the course of her career, Deneuve has worked with some of the world's finest directors, among them, Roman Polanski, Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Agnès Varda, Luis Bunuel, François Truffaut, Robert Aldrich, Claude Berri and Alain Corneau.

Born the third child in an acting family headed by René Deneuve and Maurice Dorlac, Catherine Deneuve made her screen debut (using her mother's maiden name) in LES COLLÉGIENNES, while she was still a schoolgirl. She appeared in that film and in LES PORTES CHAT with her older sister, the great Françoise Dorlac. The two sisters appeared together again in the classic Jacques Demy film, THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT.

Her English language film debut, Roman Polanski's REPULSION (1965), cast her as a schizophrenic young woman whose sexual neuroses lead to emotional withdrawal and murder. The film was a great success and earned Deneuve rave reviews for her powerful performance.

In 1967, her brilliant performance as the ostensibly happy housewife who embarks on a career of prostitution in Luis Bunuel's award winning BELLE DE JOUR, established Deneuve as one of the truly outstanding actresses of Europe and earned her an award for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. Subsequently, in 1970, she again worked with Bunuel in TRISTANA as the young orphan corrupted by her cultivated but libertine guardian.

Shortly thereafter, Deneuve moved on to an association with another great filmmaker, François Truffaut. Truffaut hired her to play the mysterious mail-order bride of a tobacco planter in THE MISSISSIPPI MERMAID (1969), opposite Jean-Paul Belmondo and later as the wife of a Jewish stage director persecuted during the Nazi occupation of Paris in the highly successful THE LAST METRO (1980), opposite Gérard Depardieu.

Deneuve made a brief foray into Hollywood in the films APRIL FOOLS, directed by Stuart Rosenberg, starring Jack Lemmon and HUSTLE, directed by Robert Aldrich, starring Burt Renolds.

In 1988, she took on the role of producer with A STRANGE PLACE TO MEET, in which she also acted with Gérard Depardieu.

Her performance in Régis Warnier's INDOCHINE garnered her the 1993 César for Best Actress as well as an Oscar nomination. The film was awarded the Golden Globe.

Deneuve worked with Daniel Auteuil and André Téchiné in Téchiné's MA SAISON PREFEREE. LES VOLEURS marks her second collaboration with Auteuil and Téchiné. Once again, she dares to take on yet another passionate and controversial role.
