Knaup's film debut was in Werner Schaefer's Jaipur Junction. In 1995, he was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize for his performance in Dominik Graf's action thriller Die Sieger. He has also been seen in such films as Father's Day, Brother of Sleep and Die Muskerknaben.
