DEAR YOU

Dear you.
I don’t know your names. You came to the Polyphonic Spree show at the Hollywood bowl. We were there signing posters and you wanted a picture with the band but your digital camera broke. You were so bummed cause you’re such a fan of the Spree. And how could you not be? They were so amazing that night! It reminded me of the first time I saw them – I felt so openhearted, so willing to be positive. I said I’d take your picture and put in on our website, so here you are with Tim and Julie and other members of the Spree. You look very happy. The whole night reminded me of how often it’s “cool” to be negative, to not engage, and to be above the vulnerability that comes with feeling happy. As an old skater, punk band member, and art school graduate I have spent a lot of time choosing to be negative. Watching the Spree just reminds me of how chicken-shit that attitude really is. I hope you like your picture.

Dear Mr. Rogers,
We miss you.

Dear Cathy,
You are one of the producers of the film, a lady with a lot on her plate, but there you are handing out posters to 18,000 people as they leave the Bowl. How hard working can you get?

Dear Me,
Try to believe this is actually happening.
