CIARAN HINDS Picture CIARAN HINDS (Captain Wentworth) has appeared in Peter Greenaway's "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover;" "December Bride," and "Circle of Friends," directed by Pat O'Connor. He will be soon be seen in Stephen Frears' "Mary Reilly," starring Julia Roberts, John Malkovich and Glenn Close. His many television credits include "The Long March," "Between the Lines," " A Dark Adapted Eye," " Prime Suspect 3," "Investigation and Sherlock Holmes," "Soldier, Soldier" and Catherine Cookson's "The Man Who Cried." Hinds played John Stacey in Peter Ransley's ten-part BBC series " Seaforth," an epic story of love and ambition. He also starred in "Hostages." He is soon to be seen with Frances Barber in Yorkshire Television's "Rules Of Engagement," which centers around a national crime task force set up by the Home Office.

Born in Ireland, Hinds had a long association with the Glasgow Citizens Company for several years, where his credits include "Webster," "Blithe Spirit," "The Plough & the Stars," "The Last Days of Mankind," "Der Rosenkavalier," "Arsenic And Old Lace," "Faust" and "The Seagull." His other theater credits include the international tour with Peter Brook's seminal "Mahabharata," "The Cuchulaine Cycle" at the Abbey Theatre Dublin, "Assassins" at the Donmar Warehouse, and "Machinal" at the Royal National Theatre. He has starred in several productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company including "Edward II," "Troilus and Cressida," "Two Shakespearian Actors," "Don Juan" and "Richard III."

"I see Captain Wentworth as a man who couldn't get it together," says Hinds. "He is talked about a lot but doesn't come into the story for quite a while. He has led a tough life at sea and in society he behaves very formally with women. At first he is very cool with Anne Elliot--the woman who rejected him--but in his heart there's something very different going on. Obviously she's older, her glow of youth has gone, but seeing her again, his feelings start to come back. What's extraordinary about him is that in front of this one woman he is socially inept. He is stumbling and nervous. Yet in his professional life, he is personally responsible for hundreds of men."
